Outdoor Light Maintenance

The beautiful designs of your outdoor lighting give life and improve the natural beauty of your lawns and gardens. Outdoor lighting also functions as exterior lights and could be used as motion sensor light to give light to dark areas of your house.

In order to maintain your outdoor lighting system beautiful and effective, you must always perform a routine check to see that they are still in their best working order. This means you have to clean and fix the fixtures, check wiring and other electrical connections, change bulbs and reprogram timers.

• Check your fixtures. There are many kinds of outdoor lighting fixtures, but the three most common types are landscape spotlights, sconces or wall lights, and garden post lights.
• Spotlight. These work by illuminating features from below. It is easy for spotlights to be surrounded by dead leaves, and may end up with grass clippings inside the lights. To check you spotlight you need to always clean them and put them in areas that can cover and protect them from debris.
• Wall lights. Always clean your wall lights by using a small broom and dustpan to clear cobwebs that form inside your lights. Wipe away residue on motion sensors to keep them working well.
• Post Lights. Also known as garden lights, post lights are on the ground and give light to pathways and flowerbeds. These do not need to be cleaned as often as other fixtures, but you should still check that the lights are straight and not easily dislodged.

With fixtures, you need to make sure they are in places where pets, children or the many people who go in and out of your place do not easily knock them down. If lights get too foggy or if they are broken, then it is time to change the lights or even their location or positioning.

Connections and Wirings

Not including solar lights and battery-powered ones, outdoor lights need electricity for power. You need to check that wires and electrical connections are always n good working order.

Remember to turn off breakers that power your lighting before doing any kind of electrical maintenance check. Test a few lights to make sure that there is no flowing electricity before starting your work.

Look for loose sconces or plate covers and keep wires out of sight. Repair exposed chords with wires that have frays or cuts. Seek help from professionals if you are not sure if you can do the job, as working with electricity can be a very dangerous thing.

Consider the time

If your landscape or outdoor lighting has never been check since installation, or if it has been years since their last checking, then you might consider having your lights and their systems checked now. Sometimes a simple check will reveal if lights are no longer functioning properly or that there are parts that are out of place.
