The Difference Between LED and Incandescent for Landscape Lighting
Landscape lighting is a great and inexpensive way to make your property look better. Put the right kind of lights in the right places and you can turn your façade, your garden, or your backyard into a feast for the eyes when the sun goes down.
The benefits don’t end there either. Landscape lighting won’t just make your property look nice but it will also make it more secure and feel safer for you and your family.
Have you decided to have landscape lighting on your property? What should you go for if you must choose between LED and incandescent lights?
LED and Incandescent – What’s What?
The incandescent bulb has been around for a long time and little has changed in its design through the years. It’s essentially still comprised of a metal fitting that plugs into an electrical source. The metal fitting is wired to a piece of tungsten inside called the filament. This fitting and source are all contained in an airtight glass bulb that has either a vacuum or a gas that does not react to heat or light.
The light is produced after subatomic particles travel through the tungsten as power passes through the metal fitting. More power coursing through the fitting means a brighter bulb.
LEDs or Light Emitting Diodes are more modern. They are essentially semiconductors that glow when atoms inside it become excited and emit light when an electrical current passes through.
Safety – LED lights are safer than incandescent bulbs because they produce little or no heat at all. That means little risk of fire or contact burns and they can be placed in areas where incandescent bulbs can’t.
Longevity – By their design LED lights last up to 15 to 20 times what a normal incandescent bulb would. This longevity also has to do with its durability. LED lights can be dropped and still expected to work. On the other hand once an incandescent bulb breaks that’s usually the end of it.
Needs Lesser Power – Most LED lights consume only a fraction of the electricity that an incandescent bulb does. Of course, lesser power used translates to smaller power bills and more savings. Lesser power also translates to lesser resources used, so you can also say a LED is friendlier to the environment than an incandescent bulb is.
LED lights also do not necessarily require a constant supply of electricity. We have already mentioned a bulb needs more power to glow brighter but unlike incandescent bulbs, a battery can power LED lights.
Comes in Different Colors – LED’s come in different colors because they can be made in different colors easily. To change the color of an incandescent bulb it has to be coated in a special, non-combustible paint and the colors are not exactly varied or attractive.
Some LED lights are also designed to display different colors so there is no need to keep switching them.
More Compact – Incandescent bulbs are huge and bulky which means there are some places where they may not fit. Some LED lights are designed to fit even in the tiniest spaces.
